we know that grover norquist may or may not have influence, but in the end, what is holding them back from a deal right now? >> one thing that is holding them back is that speaker boehner does not have full control over the conference. he has about 50 votes on the far right of the party that did not back his plan b to set a $1 million threshold. at the end of of the day, if a deal is going to be done, it is only going to happen if the center of both parties comes together. if you make any concessions significant to the democratic base, you will have concessions on the far right as well. that coalition is ultimately what got us across the finish line that ended the whole debacle of the credit rating, and here we are again. there is not that much time. if we go over the cliff, democrats are willing to put forth a bill to save the tax cuts, but it is the dysfunction that is the problem and the lack of predictable and the prediction of brinkmanship that has folks at home furious and it should. >> i am getting a lot of twitter activity on this, and that is the chain cpi and we have heard a

. >> grover norquist had this tweet where he essentially said the bush tax cuts lapsed at midnight, every r voting for the senate bill is cutting taxes and keeping his/her pledge. democrats were vehemently against all these tax cuts because they raise the deficit. these will raise the deficit by about $4 trillion. are you worried last night the deal added too much to the deficit? how come democrats have basically embraced these bush tax cuts from about a decade ago? >> let's look at what the reason was the democrats opposed those 2001 and 2003 tax cuts. it's because they weren't paid for. they blew a massive hole in the deficit, along with the two wars that weren't paid for and the medicare part d drug plan, which was a good thing but was not paid for. we need to go back to pay as you go rules. the republicans when they came in and took the majority back got rid of that requirement. we're for responsible tax cuts that help the middle class. we're not for and neither were the american people as they said in this election when they voted for president obama's reelection, were not for giving

i think it is quite telling that earlier this evening, last evening, grover norquist said he is for this bill, but our former secretary of labor bob reich is opposed. so maybe now, maybe now i guess we are all believers in trickledown economics. not i. i guess we redefine the middle class as those making $400,000 a year when, in fact, that represents the top 1% of income earners in america, not the middle class. so i guess that we now accept as normal practice in reaching bipartisan deals that the most vulnerable in our country like those who are out of work and who depend on unemployment benefits can be held hostage as a bargaining chip for more tax breaks for the richest among us. now, i'm not saying that everything in this deal is bad. there are some good parts of this, but i repeat i am concerned about this constant drift bit by bit, deal by deal toward more deficits, less job creation, more unfairness, less economic justice, a society where the gap grows wider between the few who have much and the many who have too little. so, mr. president, for these reasons, i must in conscience v
